Plant Parenthood: Spider Plant

Plant Parenthood: Spider Plant

The strappy, variegated foliage of the Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum) helps bring texture to a room. We love pairing them with plants like Fiddle Leaf Fig or Congo Plant - both which have large, single-colored leaves. The contrast helps the plants complement each other. There are varying colors of spider plants. Some of the most popular cultivars include 'Vittatum' (bright green edge with a white stripe), 'Zebra' (yellowish edge with a dark green strip), 'Variegatum' (white edge with a green stripe), and 'Bonnie" (curling leaves).

You know who else loves Spider Plants? Cats. While all plants in excess can be toxic, Spider Plants, if nibbled in moderation, are like cat nip for our feline friends. However, if you don't want them snacking on it, place it in a location that's hard for them to reach.

How we keep our Spider Plants happy:

Light
Rubbers do best in bright, indirect light (Not sure what that means? Check out our lighting diagram here). When placed in darker light, the variegation of the leaves starts to dim and they look more solid green. They will also grow slower in lower light.

Water
During the dormant season (winter), they're happy with a tiny drink every 2-3 weeks. Once it's growing season however, they like a good watering once a week. Make sure their pots are able to drain. This can be a little bothersome if you've got them hanging and need to take them down for watering, but they can get root rot if they sit in water too long.

Growth
Many spider plants propagate by sending their babies down on long stems. These tiny guys are called spiderettes and can be left hanging on the mother plant or snipped off and given to friends and family as gifts!
