Feature Flower Friday: PROTEA

Feature Flower Friday: PROTEA

BAM! We love these unique, striking focal flowers in all of their many forms. Named after the Greek God Proteus, who was known for his ability to assume many states of being, the 1500+ species live up to their namesake. They also assume the common name Sugarbush, due to the fact that their brilliant flowers produce lots and lots of sweet nectar.

If you're a sports fan of cricket, you might also be familiar with the South African Team, The Protea. Their #ProteaFire campaign a few years back celebrated their National Flower and likened their resilience and adaptability to that of the plant, which uses fire in order to sustain its species in a natural setting.

Due to similar climates, Protea are able to be grown in a few locations here in Southern California as well, blooming in the off season from many other flowers.

Because of this adaptability and stamina in nature (there's fossils of these guys dating back 300 million years), Proteas often symbolize change, hope, diversity, and courage.

As is true of many of our favorites, we also love that with proper care, these flowers have a long vase life. And If you can't tell from the the images below, we can't help but photograph these guys all the time, because they're just so flippin' cool.
