Winter is... a mood. And while the lack of sun or warmth can put a certain chill in the air, there is also beauty in the darkness.
Here at WildFlora, we find inspiration from the moody, realistic, still life flower paintings of The Dutch Golden Age. Ambrosius Bosschaert was one of the first big names in the genre, but the popularity of flowers on a dark background quickly grew and many others contributed to the flower still life game, including Jan Brueghel the Elder, Jan Brueghel the Younger, Jan Davidsz. de Heem, and Willem van Aelst.
However, we don’t only love these works of art for their content (flowers - duh), but this genre also featured a couple women of the time, like Maria van Oosterwijck & Rachel Ruysch. Hell yeah.
In creating our own inspired arrangement, we were sure to include the Dutch fav of tulips and roses. Additionally, we loved the drama of peonies, amaryllis, lilies, and dahlias, and then also mixed in supporting flowers like ranunculus, delphinium, hyacinth, daffodils, anemone, and berries. Lastly, we had to get a little fruit in the mix, as this was a popular friend of flowers in the art of the time.
